friendships as a Christian

“The people you surround yourself with matter!”

This is a phrase that is used sooo often and holds so much meaning.

It's a phrase that, well, is easier said than done.

I grew up in public school, but now I am homeschooled.

During my time in public school, middle school to be specific, I didn’t walk in the best friendships. I went through seasons where I felt I was being bullied, manipulated, and ultimately this was mentally draining.

It wasn’t till my 7th grade year that I truly sought a personal relationship with Jesus, which eventually led to changing friendship relationships.

Prior to my personal relationship with Jesus, I chose friends based on the desire to be popular. As I walk with Jesus, I realize now that this is not important.

Jesus brought me to an amazing church family, called me to homeschool with a group of Jesus following teens, and rescued me from the friendships that caused me sadness and anxiety.

But, I had some work to do too. It was up to me to let go- to block out what was causing me anxiety and leading me away from His word. I followed His direction, the best decision we could ever make.

Having friends whose lives are for Jesus is SO important. However, I know now that I can be friends with anyone, but friends do not complete me- only Jesus can do that.

In fact, Jesus calls us to be a witness to those who do not know Him. Being friends with people who don’t follow Jesus can be a moment for you to stand up in your faith and share the Gospel. It is also a time where you may need to stand firm in what you believe and not be led to worldly temptations.

Friendships are hard. They really are. Especially in middle & highschool. Stand up for what you know is true. Surround yourself with people who also know and follow the truth. The best kind of friends are the ones who point you towards the Kingdom of Heaven.
